Friday, March 19 the 2010 Winter Olympics Our Way was held in the Drake Sportsplex. Twenty-six flags of different nations were displayed on a blue background gracing the boards around the hockey rink. Folks attended from all surrounding communities. A family from Beechy, Sask. was also in attendance and were visiting George and Maria Fast. The coach, Mikayla Keyowski is from Raymore, Sask. The program was enjoyable. The tiny tots always steal the show for me.

The monthly Drake Silver Sages supper was held March 17 with approximately 24 in attendance. Members made and served stew and all the trimmings.

Erma Bergen travelled to Abbotsford, BC to attend a funeral and visit relatives and friends.

In 1909 Lord Baden Powell organized and started the Scouting rally for boys. Powell's sister Agnes created the Girl Guides by 1910. March 21, 1985, Rick Hansen Man in Motion started his 40,000 miles around the world.

Last spring, Mennonite Disaster Services volunteers did something new after serious flooding along the Yukon River in Alaska destroyed many buildings in the town of Eagle. They built log houses for the victims - 13 homes in less than 11 weeks. Seventy-seven MDS workers and town residents constructed the homes. In the meantime Mennonite Central Committee through MCC's partner, the Christian Centre for Integrated Development in Port-au-Prince Haiti continues to ship supplies like cases of MCC's canned meat, relief kits and comforters to Haiti despite obstacles and slow delivery.

Prayer and thoughts to Lottie Ewert, Mark Bergen who was not hurt welding, Jake and Ruth Sawatzky, Dustin whose surgery went well, Dorothy on the Christian makers team - Saskatoon, Clare Eby's sister Mary, Herman Warkentine's Mother, Adam Kabernick who received baptism, Wilma Rosenberger, Nancy Friesen's mother and many others who experience health problems.

Chad Bartel also scored assisted by Nick Kalnicki. There was no scoring in the second period. The third goal was scored by Nick Kalnicki, unassisted. The fourth goal Reilley Dutchak netted with Chad Bartel assisting. Lanigan came alive in the third period and found the opposition net and scored all three of their goals. Jeff Hein scored the second of three goals for Lanigan. The game was riddled with scores of penalties on both sides. Shots on goal were 35-30 for Lanigan. George and Martha Friesen won the 50/50.

Mary Harrison of Jansen was here to visit her mom Florence Boechler in the Villa.

Emerald Water and Ice from Balgonie Sask. was seen in our village March 24. He stopped at the Villa.

March 23, the Davidson Huskies drove into our village and made a brave attempt to take a win back to Davidson. The Drake Canucks outnumbered them by near twice as many but Davidson sure put up a good fight. Read Smith was first to score at the six second mark of the first period assisted by noel Blair. Tyler Blair assisted by Regan Jabs and Garret Blair assisted by Dustin Blair and Clay Wiens netted the Two goals in the second period. Davidson, not to be outdone, scored twice in the second period. In the third period Read Smith assisted by Tyler Blair scored the fourth and fifth goals. Hence, a 5-2 score and Read Smith skated away with a hat trick. Aaron Willems was outstanding in goal, Lorne Mitch won the 50/50.

Mrs. McBurney reports the Kindergarten, Gr. 1 and 2 children enjoyed weekly school skating where family members tied skates. They have been working on letter names and sounds. In math time, Kindergarten children work on numbers 6 to 10. Grade 1 have been learning measurements and math vocabulary and a variety of strategies to add numbers in Grade 2. They have been watching TV on pioneer families and made and ate bannock. They are also learning about body systems in health. On day six they are preparing a drama.

Mrs. Lone's class of Grade 3 and 4 are enjoying the warm outdoor weather. In English Language Arts the class is working on a novel. They are also finishing a math unit. Next are fractions. Report cards are followed by the Easter break starting April 2.

Mrs. de Gooijer Grade 5 and 6 classes continue to write narrative stories. The class has also paired up with Beechy school students and have become pen pals. The boys and girls are also working on decimals and measuring in math and are also conducting experiments in science. The group also had a great time on the ski trip to Wapiti.

The seven and eight students in Mr. Willems class work on a poetry unit and a unit on the Pythagorean Theorem and then will move on to a unit on graphing and representing data. Grade 7 started a unit on circles chosen by the Horizon School Division. Badminton playoffs are scheduled for April 26 & 27 after the practices and renovations in the gym/community center are completed.

Drake & District Recreation Board Newsletter

January, 2010

Just a note to bring everyone up to speed on the Recreation Board's business. Thanks to everyone who continues to help keep our community programs and our facilities up and running.

Presently the Recreation Board is gearing up for a Renovation Project on the Drake Community Center. The facility has served the community since 1986 and is in need of an upgrade and new look.

February 1st is the start date for work on the walls. Please save a couple days at the beginning of Feb., as we will need volunteers at this time. Please call Ron, Sandy or Garth for more details. A contractor is scheduled to install new wall carpet on Feb 20.

The second portion of this project will take place from March 1 - 20, when the flooring will be replaced. During this time, the hall will be closed for public use. Again, volunteers will be needed on March 1st for a couple days.

The estimated cost of this project is $50,000.00. If you have ideas on how to help, please contact our Fundraising Committee which consists of Morley Strong, Dave Ewen, Darren Blair and Denise Howat. You can also help our fundraising efforts by making a cash donation at the Village Office. Stu will give you an Income Tax receipt for your donation.

The table and chairs campaign has been very successful and we are over half way to our goal of 40 new tables and160 new chairs. If you wish to help with this project please stop in the Village Office and see Stu. A $200.00 donation buys one table and four chairs. The Recreation Board wishes to thank everyone for their generosity.

Once again, thank-you to all our volunteers. Your wonderful pies, and all your help and dedication in the Sportsplex Kitchen and Community Center Kitchen continue to help fund the ever-increasing cost of running these facilities.
