Midget Report

Drake Midgets win the Last Mountain Minor Hockey league Championship!!

The Drake midget Canucks became league champions on Monday, March 29 when they defeated the Davidson Huskies 5-1 in game 3 of the league final to win the series 2 games to 1.

Drake’s  team consisted of 11 players from Drake,  4 from Nokomis, 3 from  Lanigan and 1 from Jansen.  We set out at the beginning of the year with a league championship as our goal, and from the first practice on we focused on becoming better.  The regular season saw the Canucks finish with a record of 13 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties for 28 points and a first place finish.  During that time, a home and home exhibition series was also played with a AA team from Lumsden, which ended in a split.  Our provincial playoff run consisted of series wins over Kelvington and Hudson Bay.  We lost out to Arborfield/Carrot River/Zenon Park in the third round.  League playoffs started out with a first round victory over Kenaston with scores of 13-4 and 11-1.  The second round was played against Watrous, who had previously defeated Humboldt.  Once again, this series was won in 2 straight games with 1-0 and 5-1 game scores.  This put the Canucks into the league final against the 2 time defending champions from Davidson, who had defeated Viscount and Lake Lenore to advance to the final.  Game one was played at home with Drake winning by a score of 5-2.  Game 2 back in Davidson turned out to be a very tense game with Davidson winning 4-3 in double overtime.  Having only lost one game at home all winter, we were confident that we would win in front of our hometown crowd in game 3.  Like all our games this winter, our goaltending was very strong and our defense and offence proved that they were too strong for Davidson’s shorter bench.   When the final buzzer went, the boys were much deserving champions!

Final statistics for the year were 31 games played, 24 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties.

Team members were Brad Driediger, Tyler Blair, Brad Bergen, Connor Mutch, Aaron Willems, Dustin Blair, Read Smith, Reegan Jabs, Trevor Bergen, Clay Wiens, Hayden Francis, Garrett Blair, Brad Krause, Riley Wiens, Chase Holbrook, Mitchell Bartel, Tyson Ediger, Joel Styles and Nolan Blair.  Coaches were Darren Blair, Quinton Bartel and Scott Blair.  Manager was Ed Bergen
